What this practice does

This trauma informed parts work exercise helps you connect with the perfectionist part inside of you, listen to its fears, and contact the emotions it protects. Often shame, fear of failure, fear of judgment, or the need for approval. You will name the need beneath the behavior and practice giving yourself what was missing, so control can soften into authenticity.

How it works

You will be invited to temporarily speak as the perfectionist part. For example, I am doing this becauseโ€ฆ Then you will dialogue with other inner parts, such as a younger tender part, an inner critic, or a wiser Self. This structure brings hidden dynamics into the open so you can release tension, update old roles, and reclaim energy that has been spent on getting everything just right.

What is parts work

When early emotional or relational experiences felt unsafe, you learned to hide vulnerable parts of yourself and created protector parts to keep you safe. Those hidden parts still influence your choices, emotions, and behavior today. Parts work helps you meet these inner parts with compassion, understand what they protect, and bring them back into balance so real change becomes possible.

Simple ways to do parts work

Two chairs. Switch seats to speak from different parts.
Pen and paper. Use different pages or colors to write from different parts.
Change positions. Sit or lie in different spots to embody each partโ€™s perspective.

What you will need

A quiet undisturbed space
Optional two chairs or paper and pen
About an hour of unhurried time. The audio is 24:12 and the practice often takes about 60 minutes with pauses

Who it is for

Anyone who feels stuck in high standards, overthinking, procrastination through perfection, people pleasing, or constant self critique and wants a safe practical way to get to the root.

Results you can expect

Access and process the emotions it is guarding
