Move

A guided parts work session for overcoming procrastination

Created by Myrthe Glasbergen, MSc. — psychologist and founder of Beyond Psychology

You know the feeling. Something needs to happen, and instead you find yourself doing anything but. Not because you do not care, and not because you are lazy. There is a part of you that is resisting, and it is resisting for a reason.

This 60-minute guided parts work session for overcoming procrastination helps you meet that part directly, hear what it has been protecting, and reconnect with the part of you that was always ready to move. The same work I do in sessions, available whenever you need it.

Procrastination is rarely about discipline. It’s a protective strategy.

A part of you resists action because it is trying to keep you safe from something: failure, judgment, the emotional weight of getting it wrong, or the vulnerability of actually trying. That part is not your enemy. It formed for a reason, and it has been doing its job ever since, often at the cost of the things that matter most to you.

Underneath the resistance is usually something that was never safe to feel. And underneath that is a part of you that already knows what it wants to do, and has been waiting for the resistance to finally be heard before it can move.

What this session does

This is a guided parts work session, trauma-informed, following the same approach I use with clients in my practice as a psychologist. In this practice, you make contact with the part that resists, and you let it speak. You hear what it is afraid will happen if you act, and you feel what it has been protecting underneath. From there, you meet the empowered part of you that is ready to move, and you let both parts be heard. As the resistance is integrated rather than overridden, the inner conflict softens, and movement becomes possible again.

The audio is 24 minutes, but the full practice unfolds over about 60 minutes, including space to pause, feel, and write. Two chairs or a pen and paper can help, but are not required.

Why parts work matters here

Procrastination does not respond to being pushed, because the part creating it was never irrational to begin with. It formed as a real solution to a real threat, and pushing harder only activates the same resistance it is already exercising. What shifts it is being met directly: hearing what it has been protecting, and finally offering the part underneath something it never received.

That is what parts work makes possible.

A note before you begin

You do not need to understand your procrastination before you begin. You only need to be willing to meet the part of you that has been holding back, and ask it, gently, what it has really been trying to protect.

That is what Move is for.

GOOD TO KNOW

When something once felt unsafe to express, you learned to develop a part that took over to protect you. That part is still active today, even when the original danger is long gone. Parts work means meeting that part directly, hearing what it has been protecting, and helping it finally put the job down.

A guided audio session, available the moment you purchase. You can stream or download it, and return to it as many times as you like.

Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed, with about an hour of unhurried time. You'll be guided to speak as the perfectionist part, then dialogue with the other parts involved. Two chairs or a pen and paper can help, but aren't required.

No. You don't need the right words, or a clear memory, or a story ready to tell. This works directly with the body, not with what you can already explain.

Yes. Most people return to it more than once, especially when the pattern it works with gets activated again. It's yours to keep.

No. It's a practical tool drawn from the same approach used in clinical work, meant to use on your own or alongside therapy, not instead of it when ongoing support is needed.

Ready to begin?

One session. Repeatable. Available the moment you need it — which is often not when you planned it.
