A guided somatic session for the overcoming people pleasing

Created by Myrthe Glasbergen, MSc. — psychologist and founder of Beyond Psychology

You know the reflex. Someone asks something of you, and yes is already on its way out before you’ve even checked if you mean it. People pleasing was never about being too agreeable. It was a survival strategy: your system learned, somewhere along the way, that staying helpful, accommodating, or invisible was safer than taking up space with your own needs.

This 40-minute guided somatic session to stop people pleasing, traces the pattern back to where it formed, and makes room for the no you were never allowed to say. The same work I do in sessions, available whenever you need it.

People pleasing did not being as a personality trait.

It began as a strategy, formed in moments when your needs, your no, or your full presence felt like too much, or like a risk you could not afford to take. Staying agreeable kept you connected. Staying invisible kept you safe. Your system learned the equation well, and it has been running it ever since, often in rooms where the original risk no longer exists at all.

Underneath the pattern is a part of you that learned to appease in order to feel safe or loved, and that part has rarely been met directly. It has been managed, worked around, pushed past with willpower, but not actually offered what it needed at the time: presence, protection, the clarity that it was never the problem.

What this session does

This is a full somatic session, body-based and trauma-informed, following the same arc I use with clients in my practice as a psychologist. In 40 minutes, you move into where people pleasing lives in your body: the tension before you say yes, the collapse after you betray your own no. You trace that response back to where it first made sense, not as a story, but as something your body still holds. You meet the younger part that learned to please for safety, and you offer it what was missing then. As that part is met, your system can begin to learn a different way of relating, one where your no is allowed to exist.

Every time you need it.

Why somatic work matters here

People pleasing rarely responds to simply deciding to stop. You can know intellectually that you are allowed to say no and still feel your body collapse the moment you try. That is because the pattern was never lodged in your thinking, it was lodged in your nervous system, as a real-time read of what was safe. What shifts it is not willpower, but direct, felt experience: actually meeting the fear underneath the pleasing, and discovering that you can say no, and still be safe. That is what this session makes possible.

A note before you begin

If you recognized the yes that leaves your mouth before you have checked in with yourself, that recognition is enough. You do not need to already know how to say no. You only need to be willing to meet the part of you that learned it wasn’t safe to.

That is what No is for.

GOOD TO KNOW

A guided audio session, available the moment you purchase. You can stream or download it, and return to it as many times as you like.

Find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Sit or lie down, press play, and follow the audio. Headphones aren't required, but they help you stay with it.

No. You don't need the right words, or a clear memory, or a story ready to tell. This works directly with the body, not with what you can already explain.

Yes. Most people return to it more than once, especially when the pattern it works with gets activated again. It's yours to keep.

No. It's a practical tool drawn from the same somatic approach used in clinical work, meant to use on your own or alongside therapy, not instead of it when ongoing support is needed.

Ready to begin?

One session. Repeatable. Available the moment you need it — which is often not when you planned it.
